medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Meg,
There is a Swedish case from 1515, where Uppsala Archbishop Jakob Ulvsson retired after a very long episcopate giving for reason his advanced age. He was succeeded by Gustav Trolle, who on the other hand had to ask for dispensation because of his low age (27). Jakob could enjoy his retirement for many years, since he lived until 1521.
This case would be treated in e.g. Yngve Brilioth, Svenska kyrkans historia 2 (1941), Gunnar Olsson, Stat och kyrka i Sverige vid medeltidens slut (1947), and Greta Wieselgren, Sten Sture d.y. och Gustav Trolle (1949). There might be relevant diplomas registered at the Svenskt diplomatarium website <http://www.ra.se/ra/diplomat.html>.
Best,
Anders

Could I extend this question to bishops?
I have an example of one incapacitated by ill health - the problem was, how to appoint his successor while he was still alive.
Meg
