Donald Davie, who did write about politics. I imagine he had an impact on
Gioia, though I haven't read Dana's account, which probably exists. Davie
once introduced me to Robert Conquest, when he was on the Stanford campus
doing research at the Hoover Institute. Perhaps Guy Davenport, who
appeared in the National Review under William F. Buckley's editorship,
probably ushered in by Hugh Kenner. Virtually every poet Dana Gioia has
invited to WASH DC since being confirmed as head of NEA. Barry Alpert
