Doug,
My father took me to see the Philadelphia Flyers a few times while I was
growing up in that metro area, so I go way back with ice hockey. The
Stanley Cup was broadcast on NBC in WASH DC (Jay Leno joked about the low
ratings after each game), and since I had admired the "classic" Oilers
there was no question about rooting for them in an underdog role against a
team with which I had no connection, and which seemed to be "bought". In
retrospect, the whole experience was authentically exciting, though not
exactly poetic. Barry

Was pleased Barry had cheered on the Oilers last year; of course, this
year, they've really gone down....

Candice,
I don't live in North Carolina, though I've been on the Duke campus and in
the town of Durham. Noticing that you were the managing editor of the
South Atlantic Quarterly, I wonder what you have to say about Fredric
Jameson, who seems to be one of the only old luminaries left. What's your
version of how the bought(?) convergence of intellects exploded and left
town? The only poet I know who may have benefitted from that gathering is
Aaron Kunin. Barry
