medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
This is not really a mediaeval enquiry, and I hope you will bear with me.
Perhaps any replies should be offlist.
I am writing up some research into WW2 pacifism around Penzance her in
Cornwall, and have come across one Ernest Newlandsmith, who founded (afaik) the
New Life Movement, a Christian pacifist Arts-based set-up. He lived at
Tintagel, during the war at least.
Sadly he is not known to the DNB, nor to the 1901 census (but there are over
3000 Ernest Smiths which may explain his odd name). I googled the old chap
and to my surprise got 248 results. He was an expert in Coptic music, a
professor of music at Oxford and described also as "Friar of Mont Carmel".
There could be two Ernest Newlandsmiths, but I think not. Does anyone know
of him? I should like to know what being a Friar of Mont Carmel meant (this
was in the 1930s); and if anyone knows of the New Life Movement, which
afaik never stirred outside Cornwall, I should be delighted.
