Morning everyone,
Here as promised is the result of my recent enquiry about how different
authorities have tackled the issues surrounding the travel section. My
apologies for the delay in getting it out to you.
1. Barbican - All 'travel guides' are removed from the main sequence and
shelved separately in a prominent display
2. Brighton - Simplify the Dewey number to 914 or 915 etc. and then add the
first three letters of the country
3. Cheshire - Some of the branch libraries place their travel guides in A-Z
by country
4. Tameside - Separate sections called 'Travel Points' have been
established. All travel guides, living and retiring abroad books, and
language courses are pulled out of the main sequence and shelved
independently in these higher profile areas.
5. Essex - Use a travel sticker on the spine and an indication of the area.
Rules have been established to ensure consistency.
6. Glamorgan - Travel guides only are shelved in the 914-919 bracket whereas
all other travel writing is shelved at 942 etc.
My own two penn'worth is that I favour keeping the books in Dewey order, but
pulling out the travel writing, together with 'living and working abroad'
books, and making a separate section of that in the bay preceding the travel
guides. We are devising an improved subject guiding poster with the most
prominent destinations together with their class numbers listed.
I was concerned about a strict A-Z approach becuase we have a large number
of books that simply don't fit into simple categories and would therefore
require potentially complicated 'fixes' to get around the difficulty. I
think Dewey copes fairly well and that any new arrangement would merely
confuse our borowers even more. Good guiding should solve our issues. Still,
horses for courses....
My thanks to all colleagues who replied.
