Subject: Mystical children
medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and
culture
A colleague has asked me if there is a literature about mystical
exerience in childhood. I could refer her only to Andr=E9 Ravier, As a
little child : the mysticism of "little children" and of "those who
are like them" (1998), and Ralph Frenken, Kindheit und Mystik im
Mittelalter (2002), neither of which I've read, and to the
International Journal of Children's Spirituality, 1996- , which I
haven't seen. Does anyone know of other literature? We'd both be most
grateful for any help.
She referred to Hildegard of Bingen, Catherine of Siena, Francis de
Sales, Pierre de B=E9rulle, Marie of the Incarnation, Th=E9r=E8se de
Lisieux, Elizabeth of the Trinity, Gemma Galgani. Do we know of other
mystics who report childhood mystical experiences we could add to her
list?
For the Middle Ages I can think of Mechthild of Magdeburg; maybe
Lutgard of Aywi=E8res (depending on the definition of "child"); maybe
Beatrice of Nazareth; Christine von Stommeln; Adelheid Langmann; Joan
of Arc; Christina Ebner.
All girls, are there any boys? On gender issues and mysticism in
general is there anything important since Jantzen's Power, gender and
Christian mysticism and Hollywood's The soul as virgin wife (both
1995)?
Many thanks. -- Paul Chandler
