medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hello
thank you everyone for your very supportive comments!
It seems with this image we are back with the Trinity - in a forthcoming
article on Julian of Norwich, Alexandra Barratt discusses the 'Dixit
Dominus' trinity, an image firmly established from at least the thirteenth
century (she refers to An Index of Images in English Manuscripts: from the
time of Chaucer to Henry VIII c. 1380-1509 ed. Kathleen Scott et al. 3 vols
(Turnhout, 2002), I, 103 and II, 109.
I know this (and I hope Alexandra won't mind my mentioning her) because I
have also been considering the image of the Trinity in relation to the
spirituality of Julian of Norwich. The patronal image of the Trinity in
Norwich Cathedral seems to have been a large and grand affair and (linking
here with another recent posting) was provided with clothes and shoes! From
the VCH translation of the sacrist rolls:
1505. Thomas Worcester, goldsmith, for making the shoes of the Holy Trinity,
22s. 10d;
1510, for a ladder with a carrying stand made with ironwork to put the
tunics and crown upon the second person of the Holy Trinity, at fit times,
2s.
best wishes, Cate

If I may change the subject from libraries, tact, etc (I who once
unwittingly asked British tourists for directions to Paul Revere's house in
Boston), a friend on the med-art list has asked me to ask my learned
colleagues on this list if anyone can identify the strange structure in the
lower right of this ms. picture. It is the opening letter "D" of Psalm 109,
"Dixit Dominus domino..."
