SPECIAL SESSIONS
For the 62nd Symposium, Anne B. McCoy, The Ohio State University, and
Jon T. Hougen, NIST, are organizing a mini-symposium entitled,
“Theoretical/Computational Spectroscopy.” This mini-symposium will focus
on theoretical and computational techniques used to interpret spectra
obtained in all regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Particular
focus will be placed on systems that require us to stretch our current
understanding and models used to interpret spectra as well as studies
that involve the interaction of experiment and theory to decipher
spectra. Invited speakers will include David Perry, University of Akron;
Pierre-Nicholas Roy, University of Alberta; and James Muckerman,
Brookhaven National Lab. A second mini-symposium is being organized by
Robert Field, MIT; and Amanda Ross, Universite Lyon, on the subject of
“Alkali Atoms in Electronic Spectroscopy, Quantum Optics, and Ultracold
Environments.” This symposium is intended to identify overlapping
themes, to reveal complementary expertise between communities working in
these areas, and to establish and invigorate connections between
theoretical and experimental groups. Invited talks for this
mini-symposium will be given by David DeMille, Yale; and Paul Julienne,
NIST. A third mini-symposium is being organized by Richard Loomis,
Washington University-St. Louis, and Scott Reid, Marquette University,
entitled “Dynamics Probed by Spectroscopy.” This symposium will focus on
the dynamical information (e.g. evidences of isomerization,
dissociation, conformational exchange, chemical reactions) encoded in
molecular spectra, as well as the experimental and theoretical methods
used to decode and interpret such information. Invited speakers include
Scott Kable, University of Sydney; Carl Lineberger, JILA, University of
Colorado; and Simon North, Texas A&M University. A session on theory is
being organized by Russell Pitzer, Anne McCoy, and John Herbert, Ohio
State University, featuring an invited talk by Anna Krylov, University
of California.

ELECTRONIC ACCESS
Small refinements of the web-based submission process for abstracts have
been made. The parallel design of this user-friendly interface and the
web-based upload of powerpoint presentations is continued. The format
for the abstracts remains the same. Updated information on abstract
submission will be available early in 2007 and the abstract upload site
will open for submission about February 1, with the one for powerpoint
presentatons opening about June 1.

PRE-REGISTRATION AND ACCOMMODATIONS
A form for registration and dormitory reservation is located inside this
flyer. Similar forms can be downloaded from the Symposium website. Some
difficulties were encountered during the 61st Symposium with room
reservations not being appropriately honored. The OSU dormitory system
has expressed its deep regret and has assured us that this problem will
not be repeated. As an expression of their commitment to service, the
dormitories have refunded a portion of last year’s receipts to the
Symposium. This refund has been committed to develop a completely online
registration and dormitory reservation system, including payment. It is
hoped that this will be operational in the spring for the 62nd
Symposium. Please visit the Symposium website for updates and links.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
The abstract book will be printed directly from a computer file this
year. All abstracts whether submitted electronically or on paper should
have the style indicated below for uniform appearance in the abstract
book. This appearance will be automatically created for abstracts
submitted electronically but of course must be created by the author for
paper abstracts. Abstracts on paper will be scanned and reproduced at
approximately a 1:1 scale.

The formatting details for contributed papers can be found in the paper
version of this announcement which should be received by persons on the
symposium mailing list in January 2007 or are viewable at our Web site.
Briefly, paper abstracts will be scanned and must be smaller than 6.75
inches (17.1cm) wide and
4.25 inches (10.8cm) long. Note at the bottom paper category (see below)
and time (5, 10, 15 min) requested for presentation.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE

1. If submitting by the traditional paper method, please send a total of
two copies of each abstract, at least one of high quality for electronic
reproduction.

2. Underline the name of the person presenting the paper.

3. Remember to indicate in the comment line if the speaker is to be
considered for the Rao Prize (see below for complete instructions).

4. DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF ALL ABSTRACTS IS MARCH 1, 2007.

5. For the time of your presentation, check the program, available by
April 15 on our WWW site.

SESSION CATEGORIES

1. Theory

ELECTRONIC ABSTRACT SUBMISSION (EAS)
To submit your abstract electronically, you must follow the detailed
instructions. To accomplish this, do one of the following:
1. Access the Symposium World Wide Web site (URL--
http://molspect.chemistry.ohio-state.edu/symposium/) and follow the menu to
electronic abstract submission instructions, or
2. Anonymous logon to our FTP site,
molspect.chemistry.ohio-state.edu and download the file
/symposium/submit

When you have completed your abstract, go to the following website for
uploading, http://molspect.chemistry.ohio-state.edu/eas/. Upon
uploading, your document will be processed by a LaTeX-2e compiler and
you will automatically receive feedback indicating either a successful
submission or a problem. If you upload successfully, you need do nothing
more, except print out the web page giving your username and password.
These will be used if you upload your
powerpoint talk or with any other communication involving your abstract.
Once you have successfully uploaded your abstract, DO NOT resubmit a
“revised” copy.
DO NOT send us an additional paper copy. Either action could result in
your abstract being included twice in the program. Please note that we
can only handle one format for abstract submission. LaTeX was chosen
because of its support by several American professional societies and
widespread use in the worldwide scientific community.

SPONSORSHIP We are pleased to announce our anticipated sponsorship for
the 62nd Symposium. We anticipate that principal funding will come from
the Army Office of Research (ARO). We are most grateful to ARO for their
support. We are also receiving support from The Ohio State University
through the Chemistry and
Physics Departments, and the College of Mathematical and Physical
Sciences. We anticipate corporate and individual sponsorship as in the
past. Among other things this support allows us to reduce the cost of
the picnic for students and supports the coffee and doughnuts. We are
pleased that the Coblentz Society will sponsor the reception before the
picnic. Our sponsors will have exhibits at the Symposium and we
encourage you to visit their displays.

RAO PRIZE This year three Rao Prizes for the most outstanding student
talks at the 2006 meeting will be presented. The winners are Jack
Barbera, JILA/University of Colorado; Gary Douberly, University of North
Carolina; Qing Wen, University of Alberta. The Rao Prize was created by
a group of
spectroscopists who, as graduate students, benefitted from the emphasis
on graduate student participation, which has been a unique
characteristic of the Symposium. This coming June three more Rao Prizes
will be awarded. In order to be eligible for the Rao Prize, a student
must (i) be primary author of the work being presented; (ii) be the
actual presenter of the talk; (iii) never have competed for the Rao
Prize prior to this year; and (iv) not have completed a Ph.D. thesis
prior to March 1, 2007. If a student wishes to compete for the Rao
Prize, he or she should indicate this in the comment area of the
abstract (due by March 1) for the talk they wish to be judged and send a
letter from the research supervisor certifying that the student meets
all four of the above requirements.

This certification letter may be a simple email message addressed to
Terry A. Miller ([log in to unmask]). The letter
should identify the talk abstract by its acceptance number (when
available) which is furnished at the time of abstract submittal. The
letter of certification is not a nomination letter and will not be
considered by the prize judges. Rao Prize winners and their co-authors
are invited to submit to the Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy articles
that are based on the research described in their talks. After passing
the normal review process, each article will appear in the Journal with
a caption identifying the paper with the talk that won the Rao Prize.

The award will be administered by a Prize Committee chaired by Brenda
Winnewisser, Ohio State University, and comprised of Kevin Lehmann,
University of Virginia, John Muenter, University of Rochester, Brooks
Pate, University of Virginia, Douglas Petkie, Wright State University,
and Tim Zwier, Purdue University. Any questions or suggestions about the
Prize should be addressed to the Committee. Anyone (especially
post-docs) willing to serve on a panel of judges should contact Brenda
Winnewisser ([log in to unmask]).

PICNIC The Symposium picnic will be held on Wednesday evening, June 20.
The cost of the picnic is included in your registration (at below cost
to students), so that all may attend the event. The Coblentz Society is
the host for refreshments at 6:30pm before the picnic at 7:45pm.

LIABILITY The Symposium fees DO NOT include provisions for the insurance
of participants against personal injuries, sickness, theft or property
damage.
Participants and companions are advised to take whatever insurance they
consider necessary. Neither the Symposium executive committee, its
sponsors, nor individual committee members assume any responsibility for
loss, injury, sickness, or damages to persons or belongings, however
caused.

HELP US KEEP THE MAILING LIST CURRENT. If your address has changed,
please let us know so that you can continue to receive Symposium
notices. Go to our website and click on “Symposium Address Update.”
