medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Jim,
Could you please supply a reference for this?
Dear Listmembers,
Does anyone know of a good study (or even really good and up-to-date
encyclopedia article) on the history of indulgences - and the Latin
vocabulary used for them?
This is clearly going to be related to the vocabulary and concepts
surrounding penance/absolution/remission of sins - I´m trying to
find find an authoritative statement of how all this develops
(and eventually turns into the kind of indulgence Martin Luther
was upset by), but right now I´m more interested in the early stages
of the concept. If there isn´t an "authoritative statement" so be it,
I´d be happy with a good historical survey . . .
Meg
PS Thanks to all for the references to entrances to hell, soul birds,
etc.
Quite by chance, I came across a text relevant to the dedication of altars to the
Trinity. It is in an indulgence of 3 June 1246 to all those who visit the church of
Neuvy-Saint-Sepulchre on the day of the consecration of the high altar made "in
honore sanctae et individuae Trinitatis, Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti,
victoriosissimae Crucis, sepulcri Dominici et sancti Jacobi apostoli". That little
phrase "in honore" may, perhaps, get around the actual presence of relics.
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
