In Lincolnshire developments such as increased training opportunities and corporate requirements are making more calls on frontline staff. This has led to increased use of relief staff and less staff time with library users (Usually we do not cover 100%).
1) Does anyone have experience of redirecting other staff resources to the frontline, either to reduce relief staff spending or as a principle of good practice, for example, using Managers or Support staff in branch?
It would be helpful to hear of any ideas either tried or considered. In particular:
* The scale of the idea/practice e.g. all Tiers, all Managers, Head of Service, voluntary or prescribed, regular or occasional?
* How well these staff fare on the frontline, what sort of tasks they take on and how it affects their other workload.
* How popular it is with all staff
* If there are any 'two-way' benefits such as Managers bringing updates on service policy developments to branch, specialists dispensing new skills, or support staff experience informing operational change.
2) In listings in the past, there has been mention of transfer of relief expenditure to forms of permanent staffing, such as peripatetic staff. Any updates on this gratefully received too.
Many thanks,
Carole Oldfield
