Thanks very much for this: a helpful answer, and pretty much the sort of
thing which I surmised had happened - loads of complexity apparently
resulting in no tangible, named, maps!
Connessieurs of economies in redrawing may like to note that the Bacon
four-inch mapping of London of the mid 1870s (Ralph Hyde's no.160) was
still being printed at least as late as 1957! At least opne copy was sold,
as it finished up in my hands...
