Short Courses at the University of Birmingham, Department of Public Health
and Epidemiology
Clinical Trials 26th Feb – 8th March 2007
A two-week short course aimed at individuals who are working with or would
like to learn more about clinical trials, theory and practice. Course
content includes methods of randomisation, trial designs, statistics
(including Bayesian approaches), trial management and economic analysis in
trials. This course is delivered by senior staff in the department
including Dr Amanda Burls with key external seminar speakers including
Prof Iain Chalmers (Oxford).
Statistics and Evidence Synthesis 19th March – 23rd March 2007
A one-week course covering statistical methods associated with evidence
synthesis. The course will cover meta-analysis, heterogeneity, survival
data, individual patient data and indirect comparisons and will be
delivered by senior members of the team including Prof. John Deeks and
Prof Maurice Zeegers with external seminar speakers including Prof Mike
Clarke (Oxford).
Evidence Based Diagnosis and Screening 26th March - 30 March 2007 and
16th April - 19th
This two-week course covers the basics of assessing a diagnostic test
through to the latest developments and areas where solutions are still
developing. Participants will learn in detail about how to conduct a
systematic review of a diagnostic or screening test. Areas to be covered
include: specialist literature searching for relevant tests, critical
appraisal of diagnostic tests, information synthesis, data analysis,
report writing, economic evaluation of diagnostic tests and the use of
specialist software. Wherever possible, both the teaching provided and the
students learning will draw upon real life examples.
