medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
There is also a version of it in one of the English Ballads - called Young
Bekin or some such spelling. In this (IIRC )the young man "Becket" goes off
to Outremer, seduces the Muslim girl and leaves her. She then takes ship,
knowing only two words of English: "London" & "Bekin" and contrives to get a
ship to that destination, and that Young Bekin sees her in the Strand
weeping and ringing her hands and calling out his name. He is quite properly
smitten with remorse, claims her and marries her as soon as he can get her
baptised.
All hooey, of course but I'm surprised it hasn't been made into a Pantomime
...
If I can find the right BOOK ..... I'll confirm this with a reference ....
