medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear medieval-religion colleagues,
I am interested to hear from any of you who are familiar with the
excavations at St Pauls Outside The Walls.
When Nancy McKenna kindly sent us news of the discovery of St Paul's
tomb, I had a fuzzy feeling that I'd heard this a long time ago, but
thought I must have been having a(nother) senior moment, as the
Associated Press -- and a great many other news agencies -- wouldn't
have repeated such a story.
Just now, I was looking at a news report in today's electronic
version of the Daily Telegraph, and was struck by the quote: "I have
no doubt that this is the tomb of St Paul, as revered by Christians
in the fourth century," said Giorgio Filippi, the Vatican
archaeologist who made the discovery.
Lo and behold: The 10 March 2005 of the Catholic Herald seems to be
reporting on the same discovery. There is even a quote attributed to
Dr Filippi: "I have no doubt this is the tomb of St. Paul, as revered
by Christians in the fourth century." (See for the Herald's coverage:

Any thoughts as to the reasons behind this echoed news reporting, and
why it is catching people's attention now as opposed to 18 months
ago? Does it reflect archaeological or epigraphical work done in the
interim?
