Apologies for multiple postings.

We would like to direct your attention to a multidisciplinary session at
the EGU 2007 General Assembly meeting, April 15-20, in Vienna. Session
TS10.5 / GD12 / SM19 "Geodynamics, kinematics and crustal tectonics of the
African / Arabian / Eurasian collision zone in the eastern Mediterranean /
northern Arabian Region" organised in the Tectonics & Structural Geology,
Geodynamics and Seismology symposia, will provide a platform for a
multidisciplinary exchange and discussion on
active margin processes in this region, integrating geophysical and
geological observations and imaging of crust and upper mantle with
modelling and reconstructions.

In addition, we are coordinating and editing a volume of papers associated
with contributions to this session as a Special Publication. Sufficient
initial interest and commitment has indicated to us that this can proceed
in a timely fashion (manuscripts ready for submission in late spring
2007).  We invite contributors to this session to indicate to us
(separately from the online abstract submission) if they are interested in
participating in this Special Publication, so as to work with us on
achieving manuscripts ready for this late spring deadline.  Further
details to this interested group will be circulated early Feb 2007, with
the list of contributors finalised in Vienna, at the EGU general assembly
meeting.

Event Information:

The Eastern Mediterranean region is a well-documented natural laboratory
to study the various stages of active margin development, including ocean
closure and ophiolite formation, continental subduction,
continent-continent collision, back-arc basin evolution, slab roll-back
and slab-breakoff. The region is characterised by convergence and
collision between Eurasia and Africa/ Arabia, which has led to the
Aegean-Anatolian-Caucasus-Zagros segment of the Alpine-Himalayan mountain
belt. Both the wide variety of geological phenomena . e.g. volcanism,
metamorphism, basin formation and structural evolution, and the structure
and dynamics of the mantle through tectonophysical modelling, geochemistry
and seismic tomography, is actively studied and a wealth of information
has been published on these subjects.

One of the most challenging aspects of interdisciplinary science is to
bridge the gap between modelling and factual reconstruction. Therefore, in
this session, we invite contributions from all disciplines that study the
active margin processes in this region. Especially, we aim to provoke
discussion and welcome contributions that attempt to test geodynamic
scenarios through interdisciplinary geological studies (and vice versa).

We invite all to contribute on any combination of the fields of
tectonophysics and seismic tomography, volcanology and geochemistry,
paleomagnetism, basin evolution, metamorphism and petrology, structural
geology and tectonics in the Aegean- Anatolian-Caucasus-Zagros region,
that focus on the active margin evolution since the late Mesozoic.
