medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi Tom,
The anonymous and somewhat ideosyncratic author of Dives & Pauper, a 15th
century Middle English didactic text writes "Singular prayer of one person is
good in chamber and in oratory and better in church, but common prayer of a
comunity in church is better than singular prary, for Christ siad in the
gospel tht if two or three are gathered together in his name that is charity,
there is he in the midst of them." (Dives & Pauper, EETS bol 275 (1976), 196.)
