Susan: the back end of this is very simply a winged lion: the feet are
not webbed, I'm sure. Indeed it's a very heraldic lion, and on a shield,
so there might be a line of enquiry there?
But the head is equally emphatically tonsured, which is very odd, and
very un-heraldic. It's almost as if some point is being made.
It's not an image I've every come across, even on the more eccentric of
Cornish screens: and one feels sure that there is intention behind the
combination - it's not just a carpenter's fantasy.
Not sure if any of that is any helps...
