medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear John,
don't you think that the early 19th c. frescoes are already reflecting
strong European (Western) influence?
The Eastern and the Orthodox traditions generally decline to depict the
Trinity, which can not be seen even by the angels (cf. the 15th homily
of St John Chrysostom on John) if we do not count the 'Abraham, friend
of God' ( = OT Trinity as angels) or the 'Elder of the Days' (Vision of
Daniel) type of pictures (icons).
I would think it would be VERY interesting if you could find anything
similar to the frescoes you directed us before, let's say the 14th c.
Best wishes,
George

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and
culture
Dear Paul,
Herewith a few not awfully good views of the Holy Trinity mural in the
church of Debre Berhan Sellase (Debre Birhan Selassie; 'Light of the
Trinity') near Gondar in Ethiopia. According to Elisabeth Biasio's
entry "Ethiopia and Eritrea" in the _Grove Art Online_, the church is
early nineteenth-century (ca. 1815-20). Not altogether surprisingly,
tourist-industry websites manage to suggest/proclaim greater antiquity.
