medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
On a related (though not at all identical) issue of the head of a
Saracen, you might wish to check out my remarks concerning the enigmatic
head on the verso side of the famous Chartula of St. Francis which, I
have recently tried to show, is quite probably neither the head of Adam
nor that of Brother Leo but rather the head of the Sultan al-Kamil whom
Francis had met in 1219 at Damietta. See: M. Cusato, "Of Snakes and
Angels: The Mystical Experience behind the Stigmatization Narrative of 1
Celano," in: The Stigmata of Francis of Assisi: New Perspectives, New
Studies (St. Bonaventure, New York: Franciscan Institute Publications,
2006), pp. 29-74.
The volume of is available from FIP at franciscanpublications.sbu.edu.

I thought John's comment was quite amusing (not to say accurate) -- And
not ill-intentioned at all, though email is terrible for translating
such subtleties.
A propos Saracen's heads, it's not alone: one other example that comes
to mind is at Ingham in Norfolk (and I know a very fine c17 one at
Bishops Canning in Wiltshire). They're an intriguing bit of iconography,
but easily misinterpreted: every example I've come across is a heraldic
crest, and the 'severed head' resemblance thus coincidental.
Unless, of course, anyone knows different...

I made the images available for people overseas, who might be
interested, who might not be able to acquire them in any other way. I'm
sure they are quite capable of making their own judgments about them and
whether they will be useful for them. Despite your emoticon (ironic or
otherwise), your response is really, IMOH, not necessary.

A useful general rule in life (and this should not need repeating on a
Medieval Religion list) is not to rely on information acquired in a
church
:-)
