medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
an abbey (convent? i can't recall) devoted to him was right across the
street
from the cathedral, somewhere close to the present Palais de Justice and Ste
Chapelle.
As far as I can tell, it was situated just about where the Prefecture of
Police now is, just by the Metro Station. (Can anyone point me to a good
book / website about the archaeology of the mediaeval Isle de la Cite ?)
The Religious House of St Eloi was originally an Abbey for Woman, founded by
St Eligius himself. In 1107 it was "Reformed", that is the nuns were booted
out (after a charter from Pope and another from King had been acquired by
the new reforming Bishop Golo who was clearly looking for a soft target and
had a jolly scandal right under his nose.) The nuns were accused of Moral
Turpitude, of having turned the nunnery into a brordello no less and having
been behaving like this for some years (40 + ??) (And I bet the canons of
Notre Dame - with whom they had a "special relationship" - were implicated
as well but the nuns took the brunt of Galo's wrath). The House was
downgraded to a Priory and the nuns were replaced with monks from St Peter
Fossa.
I don't know if the monastery of St E survived to the Revolution, but a
church dedicated to St E certainly did up to the beginning of the 19th C.
