--Yes, and it was probably pre-Islamic. My Syriac is not good, but good enough
to check a dictionary and see that the Syriac words are cognates with the
Arabic. So it is true in Syriac as well that witness/martyr have the same root.
--I have a personal interest in this as I have a grandson, Shahid, living in
Kashmir. We prefer to think of his name as meaning witness rather than martyr.
