medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I'm not sure it's ended at all. The Pope still exists. Institutions of
this kind of power are more likely to morph, maintaining some backwards
continuity, rather than vanish entirely. Not trying to make some kind of
pro or anti papist point, just observing history (from on top of my
hobby horse...)

My favourite "exercise" of this sort side-steps the Middle Ages
altogether: someone
once claimed that the Roman Empire ended, finally, with the invention of
the
railway.
