medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (4. June) is the feast day of:
Quirinus (d. 308) Quirinus was bishop of Siscia (now Sisak,
Croatia). His trial and death were recorded by jerome, Prudentius,
and Venantius Fortunatus. He was thrown into the river Raab with a
stone hung around his neck. His relics were brought to Rome in the
5th century.
Optatus of Milevis (d. c. 387) Optatus was bishop of Milevis
(Numidia) and a leading Christian apologist of the fourth century.
He directed his main efforts against the Donatist schism.
Petroc (6th cent.) Legend tells that Petroc was the son of a Welsh
king. He became a monk, went to Ireland for 20 years, and eventually
settled at Lanwethinoc. One of his (much later) vitae tells that P.
went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and from there on to India, where he
spent several years as a hermit on an island (he got there wit the
help of a miraculous floating bowl). P. eventually made it back to
Cornwall, where he became a famed holy man who was so good at healing
that even a dragon came to him for help when it had a splinter in its
eye.
