Thank you Marjorie, and everyone else who has responded on this question. The
church's Jesuit identity must represent a change from its original status, but
apparently, the office of dean of St Pierre automatically carried with it the position of
chancellor of the university in Louvain. I would think this a rather unique situation.
No idea why it originated, I'm afraid.
