medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (21. June) is the feast day of:
Eusebius of Samosata (d. 379) A leading
apologist against the Arians, especially
important for his defense of the doctrine of the
Incarnation. Emperor Valens exiled Eusebius to
Thrace in 374, but returned to his see after
Valens was killed at Adrianople. E. is a martyr
of orthodoxy: while traveling to install a
bishop, an Arian woman threw a tile at him,
striking him so effectively on the head that he
died a few days later.
Méen (Mewan, Mevennus) (6th cent.) Méen is one
of those early saints who might with justice be
called "Celtic," since he moved so freely between
the Celtic-speaking lands during his career. He
was apparently born in Gwent, a relative of St.
Samson of Dol, and followed Samson on his
journeys to Cornwall and Brittany. Eventually M.
founded two monasteries (Gaël and Saint-Méen). M
is especially famous for his ability to heal skin
diseases; his healing spring at Gaël used to
attract thousands of pilgrims every year.
Engelmund (d. 720) Engelmund was an English
abbot, one of the many monks who followed
Willibrord to help evangelize the Frisians. E.
set up headquarters at Velsen (not far from
modern Haarlem) and worked there for the rest of
his life.
Leutfridus (d. 738) Leutfridus (Leufroy) was
born near Evreux. He got a good education and
spent some time teaching, but then decided to
abandon the world (I know the feeling) and went
to be a hermit. Disciples gathered around L in
the usual way, and he ended up as abbot of the
monastery of La Croix-Saint-Leufroy for about 48
years.
Raoul of Bourges (d. 866) Raoul (Ralph,
Radulphus) was the son of a count. He held
several abbacies (it's not certain if he became a
monk or not), then in 849 was made archbishop of
Bourges. R. had a reputation for learning, and
used his wealth to found religious communities.
