medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Boniface (d. 754) Winfrid (Wynfrith, etc.) was a native of Devon.
He bewcame a monk and in time head of the Nursling monastic school.
But he set out to be a missionary on the Continent in 716, when he
was about 30 years old. He had little success in Frisia, and went on
to work in Bavaria and Hesse. Boniface came to have enormous
influence, both in reforming the Frankish church and in establishing
Christianity in the borderlands, thanks to his good working
relationship with the Carolingians as well as his own dynamic
personality. At the age of 80 he abdicated his leadership of the
Frankish church and went to try to evangelize the Frisians one more
time. The Frisians didn't appreciate his efforts, and he and a large
number of companions were attacked and killed.
Meinwerk of Paderborn (blessed) (d. 1036) meinwerk was a Saxon
noble, a kinsman of Emperor Henry II, who appointed him bishop of
Paderborn. M. spent a fortune of his own money on his diocese,
rebuilding the cathedral and building monasteries besides restoring
the city walls.
Ferdinand of Portugal (blessed) (d. 1443) Prince Ferdinand of
Portugal was devout from a young age. His brother made him grand
master of the military Order of Aviz. He was co-leader of an
expedition against Tangier that was very badly organized and failed
disastrously. Ferdinand was left as a hostage, and was treated very
badly when the king of Portugal refused to ratify the treaty that had
been made by the defeated army. F. was put to heavy labor, and
eventually chained in a dungeon. He finally died of illness, and the
Muslims hung his body from the city wall.
