medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (11. June) is the feast day of:
Barnabus (1st cent.) Barnabus was a Levite originally from Cyprus,
originally named Joseph, but renamed Barnabus ("son of
encouragement") by the apostles. B. is best known as Paul's partner
in mission. Legend tells that B. was stoned to death in Salamis
(Cyprus). Another legend tells that his body was found centuries
later with a copy of Matthew's gospel lying on its chest.
Rimbert (d. 888) Rimbert, born near Brugues, became a monk at
Torhout. From there he went to assist Anskar in his missionary work
to Scandinavia, eventually succeeding Anskar as archbishop of
Hamburg-Bremen. He continued the missionary work, wrote a vita of
Anskar, and worked to ransom captives of both vikings and Slavs.
