medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (9. May) is the feast day of:
Pachomius (d. 346) The founder of cenobitic monasticism, Pachomius
was a native of Upper Egypt. He became a Christian after a term in
the Roman army, then went to the desert to study with a hermit. He
ended up attracting monks. A lot of them. Very well-organized.
Gerontius (d. 501) Gerontius was bishop of Cervia (northern Italy).
He was murdered while returning from a synod in Rome. A monastery
was later built on the site of his death, and his cult flourished.
