you have patience for very long books, and if you haven't yet read Sigrid

seconded.
>Her novels are considered to be accurate on Norwegian culture and society
her father was a noted archeologist --which, in Norway, meant primarily a
medieval archeologist.
>in the period before (Gunnar's Daughter - quite short) and following (The
Master of Hestviken and Kristin Lavransdatter) conversion to Christianity.
K.L. is the most common (in the U.S.) of her books --a trilogy, actually--
because it was a Book-of-the-Month Club selection/bonus.
but i think that Master of Hestviken is her best, a quadrilogy which begins
with an elopment, develops into a Blood Feud and lasts generations.
she spent most of the Second World War in the U.S. and i have found quite a
few signed copies of her books (one in a Salvation Army store in Memphis).
a very nice, firm yet tiny signature, usually in an unusually colored ink.
>The new translation of the last avoids archaic English.
i haven't seen the "new translation".
didn't know there was one.
Carl Jung's favorite author, btw. --mainly for her non-medieval novels, i
believe.
