medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (24. April) is the feast day of:
Anthimus (d. 303) Anthimus was bishop of Nicomedia, which
unfortunately was a favorite residence of Roman emperors in the
period c. 300. Thus, persecution of Christians was especially
stringent there---especially after a Christian zealot tore down the
imperial edict against Christians. Christian clerics were then
ordered to offer incense to the state gods whenever they appeared in
public. Bishop A refused to do so and was beheaded.
Mellitus (d. 624) Mellitus was an abbot, sent to England in 601 as
the leader of the reinforcements for Augustine of Canterbury's
mission. He became bishop of the East Saxons and is accounted the
first bishop of London. M. was banished in an anti-Christian
reaction after his royal protector died, though, and ended up as
archbishop of Canterbury.
Egbert of Iona (d. 729) Egbert was a Northumbrian who became a monk
at Lindisfarne. In a great plague outbreak in 664, E. vowed that if
he survived he would spend the rest of his life as a missionary away
from his native land. He went to Iona, eventually convincing the
monks there to adopt Roman practices---the day he died is supposed to
have been the first time the Iona monks celebrated Easter in
accordance with the Roman calendar.
