medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Alliteration in culture: a Folklore Society conference at the Warburg
Institute, London,
19th-20th January 2007.
Alliteration can be found in a broad range of linguistic forms, from old
Germanic verse to modern advertising jingles, from Finnic lullabies to
traditional proverbial comparisons, and yet it is in itself an underexamined
phenomenon. The goal of this conference is to address the phenomenon in a
variety of languages and linguistic forms.
To this end, papers are sought from specialists in a wide range of
disciplines, including medieval literature, neurolinguistics, metrical
studies, folkloristics, rhetoric, onomastics, etc., to address questions
such as:
the psycholinguistic dimension of sound patterning,
why do some languages/periods/authors prefer or avoid alliteration,
how does alliteration feature in metrical systems ,
how does alliteration feature in naming systems,
why and when it is replaced by other sound-patterning, notably rhyme,
the relationship between alliteration and stress,
the relationship between alliteration and grammar
alliteration and imprecision,
the psychology of the perception of sound-patterning,
alliteration and sound-symbolism,
eye-alliteration,
alliteration as mnemonic device,
alliteration versus rhyme / alliteration as a complement to rhyme,
the psycholinguistic dimension of sound patterning,
alliteration in proverbial phrases,
alliteration in legal phraseology,
amongst other topics.
