medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (7. April) is the feast day of:
Hegesippus (d. c. 180) Hegesippus was a convert from Judaism,
probably a native of Palestine. He traveled to Corinth and Rome to
find out about true Christian doctrine, living in Rome for twenty
years before returning to the east to die.
Hermann Joseph (d. 1241) Hermann was the son of a poor couple of
Cologne. At the age of twelve he already tried to go off and join a
Premonstratensian monastery, but was rejected as too young. One of
the monks saw to H's education, though, and in time he was allowed to
join the canonry at Steinfeld. He was famous for kindness and his
long ecstasies. When he died a cult soon arose; his canonization
process was begun in 1628 but never completed; in 1958 his cult won
official approval.
