medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (13. March) is the feast day of:
Leander of Seville (d. c. 600) One of the great luminaries of the
Visigothic church, Leander was a monk of noble family who was made
bishop of Seville in 578. He fought Arians, and even went on an
embassy to Constantinople. While there, L. appears to have collected
books and connections that helped jump-start a little "Visigothic
renaissance." L. himself was a writer, but most of his work has not
survived. He is honored in Spain as a doctor of the church
Heldrad (d. c. 842) Heldrad was a noble of Provence who inherited a
fortune and gave it away to churches and the poor, then setting out
to find a strict and pious monastery. H. finally settled on Novalese
in Italy, in time becoming abbot.
Agnellus of Pisa (blessed) (d. 1236) An early Franciscan, Agnellus
was assigned to lead the first Franciscan mission to France. In 1224
he was sent on to establish the order in England. He ended up
founding the English Franciscan province, establishing convents in
London, Oxford, and Cambridge. A. died of dysentery at age 41. His
cult was confirmed in 1892.
