medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

>I tried to access Du Cange and my system crashed (it gets like that with
.pdf files occasionally)
Acrobat isn't a Whendoze/Microsoft program, so MS has no incentive to make it
fully compatable.
Acrobat just crashed on my system here and i got one of those friendly "send
message?" querries; which resulted in a webpage informing me that MS wasn't
responsible for Acrobat and that i should *remove* the present version which i
was running and then go to the Adobe site and download and install the latest
version.
> The 'mansa' in the Charter seems to have been extensive ("id est unam
mansam in septem loca divisam
never seen the like.
>...cum omnibus ad se pertinentibus campis pratis pascuis rivulis piscariis")
that's pretty standard, "everything that pertains to it".
>One translation I have seen calls it a 'homestead' -- trying to avoid
'manor' (which if the Charter is genuine would be anachronistic, I think --
for 930 in Cornwall?)
"manor" is like "chateau" (for _castrum_) or villa for _villa_ --the word is
contaminated by more recent associations.
>There must have been many dwellings on these lands, which (the lands) were
not all contiguous,
that's what i don't understand --presumably a single piece of property, but
"mansam in septem loca divisam".
i could understand it if it were a "fief", which consisted of a group of
seperate rights, properties, rents, etc.
but a "mansam in septem loca divisam" doesn't make much sense to me.
>and so 'homestead' does not seem right either, nor proto-village, although
there is some of that about it (only one small part of it ever became a
village).
o.k., i'm stumped.
10th c. Cornwall doesn't seem to have much in common with 11th-12th c.
Chartres.
