medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (23. March) is the feast day of:
Victorian, Frumentius, and companions (d. 484) Victorian had served
as proconsul in Roman Africa (so says my source, but it seems to me
he must have been *very* old when martyred, if this is true). He and
four wealthy merchants were martyred at Adrumetum at the order of the
Vandal king Hunneric for refusing to become Arians.
Benedict of Campania (d. c. 550) Gregory the Great tells in his
Dialogues that Benedict was a hermit. Some Goths under the command
of Totila threw B. into a furnace, but he miraculously escaped
unscathed.
Ethelwold of Farne (d. 699) Ethelwold was a monk of Ripon. When St.
Cuthbert died, E. took over C's hermitage on Farne Islane.
