No not stupid that was my point
As i need to know in terms of Discovering Shropshire's History .... here at
DSH we have 3 options for adding content or linking to us
In DSH it was us that had to enable the appropriate harvest not the
providers .. i have a number of partners that i am creating SOAP protocol
links, allowing them to add content via the Content Management System or
exporting their XML records.
This gives us flexibility and means the partners are continually growing
....
The reason i asked about OAI Harvesting is that I would be interested to
know how they will link to DSH.. DSH is more than just the SMR and has alot
of content from across partners which creates a more integrated record... i
will expect the linking to data to be the The Heritage Gateway's
responsibility ... i just hope its flexible enough ... i would not like to
see any manual process that the SMR people here would have to do ... I
would also wish to know if they are going to be hitting our servers what
their structure, technology and vision is .... as I do not want our server
suffering (thats not to say it will). An OAI harvest could be an easier way
of doing download to them for the SMR staff thats why I am paying for it.
I have not heard much on the heritage gateway I am sure it will fine but I
would like to know
the point is it must have a flexible technology or you will not get alot of
partners .. hence the fact few people use HEIRPORT
many thanks

Jason/Sarah
Thanks for the links, plenty to get my head round!
One quick (and probably stupid) question to the wider forum and
particularly EH, do we (as in the data holders) need to do anything to our
databases to enable this harvesting, or will the gateway do all the work?

I too tried to grapple with that question, and can only suggest you look at
these following website. Its a protocol for harvesting metadata from
web-enabled servers. I can't say I am technically minded enough to even
begin to know how it works....

Hi Jason
Excuse my ignorance, but hopefully I'm not alone in wondering what is 'OAI
Harvesting'?

Dear all,
I'm not quite sure why telling me who is on the project board or who
supports the project is a good answer to the issues of the function of
the projects, duplication of effort, or value for money. That's a bit
akin to biblical exegesis - resorting to authority rather than evidence.
I await Ms Cayley's note about the differences between the two projects
and what they are supposed to do. As for Heirport, we checked up once
on our service details, but have not yet found it necessary to use it.
Cheers,
Neil

Neil (and other list members)
Sorry you weren't able to make it to the HER Forum meeting back in
December when my colleague Catherine Cayley gave a presentation about
the Heritage Gateway, as this would have given you more information
about the project and its aims.
Catherine also sent out a HER User Requirement in September 2005
document which your colleague Nick Boldrini replied to, which is the
first step in sectoral consultation in the project. The Project board
includes representation from ALGAO (Stuart Bryant) and IHBC (Sean
O'Reilly) and on the Project Team representing HERs are Sarah Poppy &
Paul Gilman.
I have asked Catherine Cayley to write a short note about the
relationship of the Heritage Gateway to Heirport and this will be
forwarded to the list shortly (unfortunately she is not able to do
this
today).
If you have any specific comments or concerns about the Heritage
Gateway
project, can I suggest that you address them off-list to
[log in to unmask] or
[log in to unmask] or telephone: 01793 414560.
I hope that this goes some way to allay your concerns, but as I say
Catherine will be sending something to the list in the next few days
to
clarify.
Regards,
Bruce
