Indeed.
I suspect that the "collaborations are a strategy to bring forth
writing when the well's dry. My own strategy is not to write at those
times. Produces a sense of uselessness, but that's less distressing
to me than the obvious strain of trying too hard.
The little essay I find problematic. There's nothing unusual enough
about building work on someone else's work to require explanation.
The explanation given is a mite strange. It seems to say "If we work
alone we always have the last word. But if we collaborate we don't
have the last word. So I collaborate with the dead in order to have
the last word."
Did I miss something?
