medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and
culture
I have been asked (it's quite an honour) by some good friends to help
co-ordinate their wedding. The wedding will be in an English medieval
parish church, and the Vicar is open to some adaption of the usual
ceremony to meet their particular needs and interests.
I would love to work in some elements of medieval weddings, and am
wondering how much is known of both official ceremony and lay
'traditional' practice at these.
In particular, do any list members know of what a wedding involved
before in-church weddings became universal (which I imagine was a
gradual process roughly from the early c13-late c14)? My impression is
that at this date the standard wedding involved a brief blessing in
the
church porch, then off to the nearest source of beer: but this is a
vague impression, and I have never come across much detail on the
subject. What precisely happened in the porch at such events? What
other
activities were normal at weddings of this period?
All suggestions or pointers to further reading welcomed. Apologies for
the not-strictly-scholarly (but hopefully informed) application to
which
the information will be put. I hope this is ok with the list and its
Moderator/s.
