medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (14. February) is the feast day of:
Valentine(s) See the discussion thread of the last few days for all
you ever wanted to know about saints named Valentine.
Maro (d. c. 423 or 433) Maro was a Syrian hermit who attracted
crowds of disciples. His relics were kept at the monastery of
Beit-Marum, from which the Maronite Christians claim their origin.
Auxentius (d. 473) Auxentius was of Persian descent. He spent much
of his life as a hermit in Bithynia.
Antoninus of Sorrento (d. 830) Antoninus was a Campanian who became
a monk. He and the bishop of Sorrento were great friends; eventually
the bishop went off to commune with the archangel Michael on a nearby
mountain, leaving his friend to deal with care of the diocese. So A.
settled down at a monastery in Sorrento and eventually became abbot.
Cyril (d. 869) and Methodius (d. 884) These Greek brothers are
recognized as the apostles of the southern Slavs, fathers of Slavonic
literary culture, and apostles of Europe. They were sent as
missionaries to Moravia (modern Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovenia,
and Serbia) in 862. As natives of Thessalonika, they had spoken
Slavonic from childhood. The two were highly successful, winning the
intense dislike of German missionaries. Cyril died in Rome when the
two went there to win papal support; Methodius was consecrated as
bishop and sent back to the missionary field (although he was
captured by the Germans and imprisoned for some time).
