An interesting question which also came up at a meeting I have just returned from.
My take is that the submission of an assignment should still be a learning experieince. If students are really learning from comments and advoce on both writing style and content through a proofreading / peer review / 'please take a look at my essay' process then all to the good. If they do not engage with the feedback in a way that improves theor understanding then we may be talking about plagarism. Making the process as open as possible will help. I am not sure acknowledging proofreaders alone will cover this though - how would we know the level of help provided?
