VACANT POSITION

FACULTY OF INFORMATICS AND DESIGN, CAPE PENINSULA
UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

DEAN: FACULTY OF INFORMATICS AND DESIGN


The Faculty of Informatics and Design is striving towards
strategically positioning itself to be a leading higher
education site in Southern Africa for the Creative Industries
and ICT, with a commitment to the academic ideal of excellence
and scientific practice, and the development of a learning
context in which knowledge can be discovered, shared and applied
to the benefit of economic development regionally and
nationally. The identified fields are regarded as core niche
areas by the institution and the successful applicant will need
to be at the forefront of developing the faculty as a Centre of
Excellence and a leading provider in the Southern African
education landscape, with international recognition.


Minimum requirements:

-   A master's degree in Design (Doctorate preferred), or a PhD
     in ICT
-   A minimum of 4-5 years in a senior management position
-   High academic and/or professional standing in the fields of
     ICT and/or Design, and high academic credibility amongst peers
-   Competent, dynamic academic leadership
-   Proven general dynamic leadership and management abilities

Key Performance Areas:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

-   Strategic planning, including the alignment of the
     faculty's vision and planning with the institutional vision and
     mission and strategic plan, and alignment with national and
     regional government policy initiatives
-   Research development
-   Academic and professional leadership
-   Academic, Financial and Operational management
-   Professional external liaison and the forming of
     multi-level partnerships with:
o   other academic institutions, both nationally &
     internationally,
o   industry,
o   relevant government departments,
o   professional bodies,
o   relevant community organizations,
o   and other national and international role players
-   Marketing of the Faculty and recruiting of postgraduate
     students
-   Enhancing the image of the Faculty and the University at
     large
-   Shared responsibility for the management of the University
-   Facilitation, management and maintenance of sound internal
relations regarding staff and students, as well as their
development

Competencies:

-   A sound understanding of the disciplines of ICT and Design
     in the tertiary education sector, and their applications in the
     development context, (An interest in Human-Information
     Interactions, Design for Development, and Universal Design would
     be a recommendation).
-   A proven record of research, both discipline-based, and
     strategic
-   Proven innovative and dynamic leadership qualities
-   Relevant and good management abilities
-   Ability to operate at the highest level of contacts with
     the different stakeholder organizations.
-   Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain links with
     local, regional and national government departments concerned
     with ICT and Design and tertiary education, representing the
     disciplines on appropriate working groups and initiatives.

-   Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain appropriate
     partnerships and alliances with international higher education
     bodies and professional organizations.
-   Ability to develop and maintain good human relations.
