"Challenges of design promotion in Europe"
a two day conference organised by APCI, Paris, 8 & 9 January 2007
Dear colleagues and friends,
APCI is organizing the fourth conference on design support and design
promotion in Europe. We would like to start a forward thinking
process, and start a new thread that we would call :
“designing design support”
To match this challenge, a new format had to be defined! We plan to
run a series of focused sessions, with shorter presentation (15 to 20
minutes), and 30 minutes of discussion with the floor. Speakers will
be asked to “champion” a specific perspective, in order to feed in
plural insights, and fuel the debates.
The preliminary programme is built around the following themes :
- Who needs design support ? The current situation is that designers,
the industry, and the governments are the main stakeholders, but do
not have the same control on the design support activities. What
about the society in general ?
- What are the aims of design support ? To consolidate the design
industry, to sustain economical activities, to create a better society ?
- Who should pay for design support ? Is it a mission, and its budget
should come from the government, is it a service –and which business
model would be applicable-, can it be a non-profit activity ?
- What are the long-term perspectives for design that could influence
design support ? Can design keep its binds to manufacturing ? Or
should design claim a broader scope of activities and position itself
at the top level of the creative economy ?
- Questionning the current activities ? What are the benefits of
prizes, exhibitions, publications ? What is the value of workshops,
their impact ? Is a design center a “must” ? Should a design council
get into politics ?
- Where could the relations between design support and innovation
support go ? What could be the benefits of dissolving design support
inside innovation support ? Or should we rather consider driving
innovation by design, and absorb innovation support ? Or could design
support concentrate on bridging R&D with societal trends ?
If you have any speakers that you would suggest to discuss these
topics, feel free to send us a note with the name, and a contact
point (mail or phone number). We will then get in touch directly with
them.
We will also present the aims and means of the new « European Design
Management Award », organized by the European Commission, and
implemented by a consortium of design promotion bodies that will be
present in Paris.
The conference is open to all, it is aimed primarily at all design
promotion bodies, innovation and development agencies, civil servants
concerned by economical and cultural development.
The conference will take place in the “Cité des Sciences et de
l’Industrie” (as last year).
Registration fees for the whole conference is 310€ (including two
lunches), or 160€ per day (lunch included).
The conference is in french and in english (simultaneous translation).
Pre-registration by mail is strongly recommended :
