Hi all
Thankyou to all those who have replied so far. I have re-examined the sample with your suggestions in mind and it is quite possible that these are concretions. Examination under a microscope shows no segmentation that i would expect from insect remains. These are definitely not of bone material and the hollow in between each one does seem quite viably root made.
Any other suggestions people may have are very welcome though.
many thanks
James Summers
