Dear Colleagues,
Since responding to Victor's last note, I have had a few requests for
the book chapter,
Friedman, Ken. 1998. "Cities in the Information Age: A Scandinavian
Perspective." In The Virtual Workplace. Magid Igbaria and Margaret
Tan, eds. Hershey, Pennsylvania: Idea Group Publishing, 144-176.
This chapter is relevant to the thread on data in several ways. It
offers a few reflections on the ways that data technologies are
embedded in and shape the cultures around them. As Patrice Flichy
notes, all technologies are social technologies, and this offers a
few examples, past and present. (Among these is the story of how
China developed what could have been a decisive advantage in
computing technology over five centuries ago, only to turn its back
on technological advantage for an internal cultural reason.) The
chapter also offers useful citations to good resources. Finally, I
apply some ideas and lessons from history together with design
thinking to issues in city planning and technologies for virtual work
and play. Do note, however, that I wrote this chapter nearly a decade
ago. While the past remains reasonably stable, some of the forward
ideas are now out of date. After all is said and done, the future
isn't what it used to be.
I will be happy to provide a copy of this book chapter in PDF format
for anyone who wishes one.
