Parsons The New School for Design, one of the largest schools of design in North America, is seeking applicants, pending budget approval, for a full-time faculty position in the Department of Illustration.
Opportunity
The position provides significant opportunity to a take a leadership role in the department. The successful candidate will teach and help develop curriculum in the department's focus areas of visual narrative and authorship. The candidate will establish and further relationships between the department and publishers, producers and leading practitioners of the graphic novel, children's and adult illustrated books and motion graphics. The candidate will help position the department as a leading participant in these areas through attendance at major national and international conferences and festivals.
Position
We are seeking applications from illustrators with a strong interest in developing a cutting-edge program which emphasizes writing and drawing skills as wells as explorations in new creation and delivery methods in all media, traditional as well as digital. As the field of illustrations changes, students increasingly need to be skilled in a variety of media and in non-illustrations disciplines in order to meet the challenge of becoming creators of content and imagery, rather than responders to external briefs, which has been the traditional role of the illustrator.
Requirements:
The ideal candidate will have:
* An MFA in a related discipline and/or equivalent professional experience;
* Substantial teaching experience with a demonstrated interested in curricular development;
* Possess a demonstrated record of scholarship and or professional activity in illustration;
* An international perspective on the history of illustration and contemporary design issues;
* A developed philosophy of the roles of illustration today;
* A demonstrated knowledge of, and interest in, developing studies in related disciplines such as motion graphics and animation, visual narrative and comics;
* An understanding of how issues in illustration education relate to the concerns of other design studio disciplines;
* Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills;
* The ability to help develop the school's critical public programs in this field, both in terms of exhibitions and lecture/seminar programs.
Start date. July 1, 2007.
