We are starting to bite the Shibboleth bullet here at Hull following the
JISC announcements earlier this year. Amongst many other considerations is
how Millennium will work in a Shibboleth environment and what may need to be
done to enable this. I realise there may be no immediately apparent reason
why Millennium should need to work with Shibboleth (it is not an ATHENS
resource, after all), but Shibboleth offers a standard way to facilitate
access to resources and systems, and it may be valid for Millennium to be
accessed via this route as well.
I notice that in the call for presentations for last week's conference
(which I was sorry to miss as it looked good) Shibboleth was mentioned in
the list of proposed topics, but that this was not picked up on looking at
the programme. If I missed any discussion I would be happy to be corrected
on this, though.
Speaking to Innovative, they indicate that they are not intending to adopt
Shibboleth on spec, but wish to understand more specifically what would be
required in order to see what can be done. There is a close potential link
between Shibboleth and Innovative's SSO solution, but this link needs
clarification to assess any possible required work.
It would be useful to gather information on any planning, thinking,
considerations of how Millennium might work with Shibboleth from EIUG
members to help inform any work Innovative might need to/can do. I
primarily see Millennium acting as a Service Provider, but am open to other
suggestions and ideas. I am happy to gather together this information, and
would be grateful if you could respond to the following two questions
(off-list if you'd prefer - information will be kept anonymous if desired)
to kick off discussions. Thanks.
1) Have you investigated the use of Millennium with Shibboleth? If so,
where do you see Millennium fitting into a Shibboleth environment?
2) Have you looked at or adopted Innovative's SSO solution? If so, have you
looked at how this might work in tandem with Shibboleth?
Regards,
Chris
PS. The answer 'no' to either of the above is equally valid, as this will
at least provide a state-of-play view to build from!
