Dear Colleague
Five-year Academic Fellowship leading to permanent academic position
Oxford University is currently seeking applications to an exciting
fellowship for an early to mid-career quantitative researcher in educational
studies. The Academic Fellowship in Quantitative Methods in Educational
Research is for five years, rather than the typical three. More
importantly, the position will become a permanent, tenured academic position
at the end of the five years, subject to satisfactory performance. The
fellowship provides a structured path into an academic career and is thus an
excellent career opportunity for an outstanding quantitative researcher at
one of the world’s leading universities. Please circulate this information
to any relevant colleagues or students.
The Department of Educational Studies at Oxford University has traditionally
been strong in qualitative research. Recent professorial appointments have
added complementary strength in quantitative areas, particularly Professor
Herb Marsh, who is internationally known for his quantitative research in
education, Professor Terezinha Nunes, and others (see
http://www.edstud.ox.ac.uk/people/academic2.html).
An important component of the fellowship is for the successful applicant to
establish a research track record that is internationally recognised during
the first five years – either in quantitative methods or in a substantive
area that has strong synergies with cutting-edge quantitative methodology.
Starting in the 2007-2008 academic year, the Department is also developing a
doctoral-level quantitative programme that will include components, for
example, on confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modelling,
multilevel modelling, growth models, Item Response Theory, and other
advanced quantitative analyses. The successful candidate will have a key
role in the development and conduct of this programme. Hence, the
fellowship offers the appropriate person a unique opportunity in both
research and teaching.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in the application of
advanced quantitative research methods in the field of education or in an
allied field. They will have a doctorate, or equivalent, and ideally some
post doctoral experience. For this senior post doctoral position, we are
looking for someone with a good research track record relative to their
stage of development, including at least some recent publications in leading
international journals and, perhaps, successful grant applications and
supervision of research students.
The closing date for applications is 26 January 2007. The post will be
available from 1 March 2007 or as soon as possible thereafter.
More details about the position are given on the Department’s website under
RCUK Academic Fellowship in Quantitative Methods in Educational Research
(http://www.edstud.ox.ac.uk/about/current.html). You can download the
further particulars of the fellowship from there or they are available on
the University’s website at http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/fp/ Please do read
these carefully before submitting an application as they give the selection
criteria and details of how to apply.
Yours sincerely
Professor John Furlong
