ANGELA MAWLE

Angela's career has encompassed the true breadth and diversity of public health including front line health service delivery (through her 13 years as a nurse and health visitor), work in communities around sustainable development planning, and academic environmental sciences. Amongst her many roles she has been an environmental consultant, director of the Women's Environmental Network, sustainable City Manager in Bristol City Council and Sustainability Manager for the Isle of Wight.

In June 2003 Angela became the Chief Executive of UKPHA, a role which has enabled her to champion the vision that public health is about the environment and society in which we live. During her time at the UKPHA, Angela has made it possible for the organisation to develop radically from the grassroots, continuously encouraging member consultation and involvement in all areas of work. Specific achievements include; increasing the innovation of the Annual Forum to allow work to develop with local partners in the host region and thus to enable a positive footprint to be left after the event; linking with organisations which play a vital role in promoting the health of the population, but which have traditionally been overlooked, (including developing links and projects on fuel poverty, green exercise and more recently planning and housing); and leading the major UK public health bodies to unite to produce a concordat of their views for the future of public health.

GEOF RAYNER

Geof Rayner is social scientist working in public health. Born on Merseyside he was educated in Australia and the UK, obtaining a PhD from London University. He was elected an Honorary Member and then Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health of the Royal College of Physicians. He is currently a Visiting Research Fellow at City University, London and works as a freelance consultant.

Geof has worked in local government, as a university teacher and researcher in the UK and north America and as consultant for organisations in health, local government, for UK and European charities, the UK NHS and the WHO. He was a trustee of the National Council of Voluntary Organisations and the founder of a London charity providing services to people with HIV/AIDS. He was a member of the Policy Committee of the World Federation of Public Health Organisations and chair of the UK Public Health Association (1999- April 2004). He is currently a director of PharmacyHealthLink, a charity promoting health promotion through community pharmacies, and No Smoking Day, a charity promoting smoking cessation.

Geof is a director of a farm and was a member of the advisory group to the UK Department of Food and Rural Affairs in the development of the UK's Food and Farming Strategy. He is currently an expert advisor to the Chief Scientist's Foresight project on obesity. He is also the founder and is a director of Photofusion Photography Centre, the UK's largest independent photography centre (www.photofusion.org <http://www.photofusion.org/> ).

HEEMA SHUKLA

Dr Shukla has a multidisciplinary background with a Masters in Human biochemistry and applied nutrition and a PhD from SouthBank University. She is a registered public health nutritionist with the Nutrition Society (UK) and a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health. She is the founding Chair of the Food and Nutrition Special Interest Group (SiG) of the UKPHA. Under her leadership, the SiG organised an interactive workshop for feedback to the draft London Food Strategy with the London UKPHA membership, and a debate on 'Food Choice: whose choice is it?' where the farmers, the industry, and the consumer were invited to debate on who chooses and who loses at the UKPHA 14th Annual Forum.

Dr Heema Shukla is currently Associate Director of Public Health at Hillingdon Primary Care Trust. She joined the Trust in March 2003, where her initial focus was analysing the 2001 Census data and other public health data to map the health of communities residing in Hillingdon and the Ward Profiles. She was seconded to the Regional Public Health Group (RPHG) at the Government of London for six months, where she led on the delivery of obesity and sexual health themes of the White Paper Choosing Health. Currently her portfolio at the PCT includes among other things, leading the health contribution to the Local Area Agreement and childhood obesity.

Prior to the current post, Dr Heema Shukla had a successful career in academia. She was a senior lecturer in public health nutrition at South Bank University and University of Westminster. She contributed to the development of public health nutrition curriculum and research. She has research collaborations with researchers both in India and America and has published and presented scientific papers. She has also been active in giving health related seminars and projects in the community.
