medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (19. December) is the feast day of:
Nemesius and other martyrs of Alexandria (d. 250) Nemesius was an
Egyptian, falsely arrested as a bandit. He was cleared of that
charge, but immediately re-arrested as a Christian. He was executed.
Today several other Christians who had criminal accusations made
against them falsely are commemorated.
Anastasius I (d. 401) Anastasius was a Roman who became pope in 399.
Jerome says that he was a "man of great holiness" who loved poverty
and led a pure life.
Urban V (blessed) (d. 1370) Guillaume de Grimoard was born to a
noble family of the Languedoc; his uncle was St. Elzear of Sabran.
The future pope got a good education and became a Benedictine. He
taught canon law and theology at Montpellier. In 1352 he was
appointed abbot of St. Germanus, Auxerre. G. became very involved in
diplomatic work for the Avignon popes. Then in 1361 there was an
impasse in the election of a new pope; the cardinals could not agree
on one of their own, so they chose G. As Pope Urban V, he attempted
to return the papacy to Rome, but it didn't work out. UV was buried
at St. Victor's, Marseilles, which became a pilgrimage site. His
cult was confirmed in 1870.
