SUPPORTING TEENAGERS THROUGH PUBLIC LIBRARIES
9 February 2006, London
Recent press coverage of teenagers has been almost universally negative. Hostile
views of young people are neither new nor confined to the media. For this and other
reasons library provision for teenagers is often regarded as problematic. Yet many
library authorities have developed excellent relationships with teenagers, and are
providing services to them that are relevant, innovative and highly valued.
This interactive workshop for public library staff will examine strategies to improve
and enhance library services to teenagers. Topics to be considered will include:
· teenagers' needs and wants
· the strengths and weaknesses of current teenage provision
· staff responses to teenagers
· meeting teenagers needs effectively and supportively
· methods for encouraging library use
· maximising the potential of the library's resources for teenagers
· teenage reading groups
· consequences for policy and practice
BENEFITS OF ATTENDING
The workshop is an opportunity to explore the interface between teenagers and public
libraries, to share good practice, and to identify ways to broaden libraries' appeal to
this age group.
BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL:
· broadened their understanding of teenagers and their needs and expectations
· identified strategies for successful library provision for young people
· discussed appropriate resources and effective library layout
· gained more confidence with this age group
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Managers of children's and young people's library services, children's librarians,
other public library staff.
WORKSHOP LEADER: ANNE HARDING
